Heckler & Koch designed the SP5 as a semi-automatic, civilian sporting pistol (hence the “SP” prefix) that matched the look and ergonomics of the well-known MP5 submachine gun. It is, in fact, the second iteration of a HK commercial/civilian pistol based on the MP5 design.

The SP5 is designed and manufactured to meet the strict definition of a civilian pistol in the United States, and it cannot be modified to fire fully automatic. Other features of the SP5, such as adjustable target sights and the lack of a foregrip, confirm its status as a commercial product approved for sporting use by both the US and German governments. The Heckler & Koch Oberndorf factory in southwest Germany manufactures the entire SP5.
